Lack of match between nutrient-enriched marine seafoam and intertidal abundance of long-lived invertebrate larvae

چکیده

Since most marine benthic species experience a pelagic larval phase, scales of dispersal are key determinants population dynamics. Biologically derived foam has been suggested to increase chances fertilisation and reduce larvae short-live duration (hours), thus maintaining localised intertidal populations. The present study examined the role sea-foam plays as mechanism physical retention/accumulation for long lived (weeks) invertebrate that relatively long-lived (weeks). Larvae were collected using submersible pump at two sites along south-east coast South Africa, where assemblages dominated by beds mussels barnacles. Sampling took place on six occasions in 2015–2016, during events high production periods no accumulation. Foam/water was from surface bottom tidal channels. There difference abundance any taxa examined, whether or absent. Regardless state, barnacle polychaete mostly associated with short water column This highlights how very nearshore environment may play limiting dispersal, but especially effects processes can be taxon-specific, depending characteristics.

Video tracking of marine invertebrate larvae

The tropical barnacle, Balanus amphitrite, is an economically important fouling species (it settles on natural and artificial submerged surfaces) with a short generation time and larvae that are relatively easy to culture in the laboratory. These attributes have contributed to its acceptance as a model species for larval settlement studies. The settlement stage larva the cyprid (figure 1) measu...

Invertebrate-mediated Nutrient Loading Increases Growth of an Intertidal Macroalga

Even in nitrogen-replete ecosystems, microhabitats exist where local-scale nutrient limitation occurs. For example, coastal waters of the northeastern Pacific Ocean are characterized by high nitrate concentrations associated with upwelling. However, macroalgae living in high-zone tide pools on adjacent rocky shores are isolated from this upwelled nitrate for extended periods of time, leading to...

Size-specific predation on marine invertebrate larvae.

Predation on planktonic larval stages is frequently a major source of mortality for the offspring of benthic marine invertebrates. Mortality rate likely varies with larval size and developmental stage, but few experiments have measured how these factors affect predation rates. I used experimental reductions in egg size to test how variation in larval size affects the likelihood of predation dur...

Global patterns of macro invertebrate biomass in marine intertidal communities

We examine global patterns of benthic macroinvertebrate biomass and its distribution among functional feeding guilds in marine intertidal cOnmlunities. Variation in ash-free dry biomass was related to physical variables (mean annual air and water temperatures, sediment grain size, intertidal slope, tide range and type, wave height and exposure) by least-squares regression analysis of data for 3...

Life history and viability of a long-lived marine invertebrate: the octocoral Paramuricea clavata.

The red gorgonian Paramuricea clavata is a long-lived, slow-growing sessile invertebrate of ecological and conservation importance in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. We develop a series of size-based matrix models for two Paramuricea clavata populations. These models were used to estimate basic life history traits for this species and to evaluate the viability of the red gorgonian populatio...
